Sci-Port Discovery Center to become Sci-Port Louisiana's Science Center

Officials at Sci-Port Discovery Center announced today that effective October 1, 2008, its formal title will become Sci-Port Louisiana's Science Center, a name change that reflects the organization's growing service as an educational resource throughout the state.

"We realized that our outreach program has extended beyond the Caddo and Bossier borders and that this year we took our program to 41 of the 64 Louisiana parishes," said Ann Fumarolo, Sci-Port President & CEO. "We operate across geographical, economic, political, religious and cultural boundaries; and as Sci-Port Louisiana's Science Center, we are even more perched to take our mission to new levels as we continue to be a major regional hub for hands-on science and math education."

Fumarolo added that the science center's name will still be known as Sci-Port in its shortened form.

The new--or expanded--name will go into effect as Sci-Port kicks off a 10-week celebration of its 10-year anniversary with le Bon Tour Roule, an October 2-5 bike tour of Sci-Port staff and board members from Shreveport to Baton Rouge. Staff riders will include: Fumarolo; John Armistead; Director of IMAX; Robert McGuire, Director of Programs; and LaTanya Martin, Director of Finance. Board riders will consist of Jon Q- Petersen, Board President; and Robert Stroud, Board Treasurer. "The tour is a form of outreach because at each stop we will meet with our educators and students who took part in our programs," said Fumarolo.

The number 10 also figures prominently with Sci-Port this year, with Parents magazine's September issue ranking Sci-Port in its Top-10 science centers in the United States. Sci-Port additionally has significant exposure in the August 18 southeast subscriber edition of Time magazine, with a two-page advertorial spread honoring Jon Q- Petersen, his receipt of the Toyota President's Award and support of Sci-Port. The section highlights Sci-Port's Gee Whiz Science Carnival outreach program, and includes a photo of Peterson, Fumarolo, and area students Dustin Dixon, Margaret and Audrey McNew and Neil Nathan around one of the portable Gee Whiz exhibit cubes.
