Cathy Williamson, Sci-Port: Louisiana's Science Center's Caddo Parish Education Coordinator, was named The Distinguished Informal Science Educator of the Year by the Louisiana Science Teachers Association.  The award is designed to recognize one non-classroom teacher who has made extraordinary contributions to the advancement of science education.

"We are extremely proud of Ms. Williamson and are pleased to see her honored for all of the hard work she does behind the scenes to support our students," said Caddo Parish Schools' Superintendent Dr. Gerald Dawkins. "Sci-Port has been and continues to be a tremendously valuable partner for us, and Ms. Williamson plays an integral role in that relationship."

Caddo Parish Schools has provided an onsite educator since the inception of Sci-Port at its original Commerce Street location in the early 1990s.  Cathy came to Sci-Port in 2001 after a competitive interviewing process and teaching for 27 years in a classroom.  "My favorite thing about working for Sci-Port is that I get to use my enthusiasm and creativity; I have more opportunities [at Sci-Port] to use my creativity than I did in the classroom."

Cathy's teaching history includes an array of area middle and high schools, including St. Joseph Middle School, Huntington High School and C. E. Byrd High School.  She received her Masters in education at LSU Shreveport in 1986 and continued to complete 30 hours of graduate level courses.

"The 'donation' of Cathy Williamson to Sci-Port from Caddo Parish Schools directly impacts the credibility of Sci-Port in an undoubtedly positive way," said Sci-Port's President/CEO Ann S. Fumarolo. "We love Cathy and all that she has accomplished while working for and as part of the Center."

In the award submission packet for Cathy's nomination, Rebecca Prosino, Sci-Port's Strategic Projects Manager, best captured Cathy's passion for informal science education and how this makes her a perfect fit for the science center: "Cathy may be the only person in Shreveport who owns a James Watson bobble-head doll, on display in her joyfully jam-packed office.  She's got a container of live duckweed, spring scales, crayons, meter sticks, tiny satellite replicas, animal skulls, a Mother Nature costume, autographed astronaut pictures, and models of molecules.  I wish I could play in Cathy's office with my child."
