The board of directors at Sci-Port: Louisiana's Science Center presented Sci-Port's President/CEO, Ann Fumarolo, with the establishment of the Ann S. Fumarolo Endowed Summer Camp Scholarship Fund in honor of her ongoing service and dedication to Sci-Port.  The establishment of the fund, with gifts given by board members totaling nearly $5,000, was announced at the Chairman's Annual Reception on Thursday, December 16 in front of board members, donors, elected officials, local educators and others from the community.

The Sci-Port Board, looking for a unique and lasting way to honor Fumarolo, who continues to serve as President/CEO, turned to her senior level staff for guidance.  Establishing a fund to pay for summer camp admission for deserving students was the idea of Louis Papai, Sci-Port's Director of Education, who has worked with Fumarolo for 12 years, both at Sci-Port and at Science Central in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.  Papai explains, "I knew that Ann would wholeheartedly support this over any other type of recognition because it's something that doesn't just honor her, but it's something that gives back to the community.  Something similar was done for an employee at Science Central when I worked for her there, and she thought that it was just the greatest thing to do for someone."

With tears, Fumarolo thanked the entire roomful of supporters, acknowledging the board by saying, "I'm speechless and truly surprised.  This means more to me than anything you could have done."

The Ann S. Fumarolo Endowed Summer Camp Scholarship Fund will exist in perpetuity, as only the interest earned will be allocated toward admission for Sci-Port's Summer Science Blast for children in the Shreveport-Bossier City community who would not otherwise have the funds to attend the week-long summer day camps at the Center. Guidelines will be available in spring 2011 for those wishing to apply for admissions assistance to attend one of Sci-Port's Summer Science Blast camps.

Endowment funds provide a steady predictable source of income over time, allowing organizations to make future plans and build its programs.  This is only the second endowment fund established at Sci-Port to benefit a specific program or purpose, and it is the first endowment named in honor of an individual as well as the first for summer day camp admission.

Sci-Port's 34 member board was led by Ann Stokes in 2010.  Local architect, Mike McSwain, takes the reigns for 2011 and 2012.
