Production at the General Motors Shreveport Assembly Plant has ended, but GM and UAW Local 2166 arranged for one final gift for the North Louisiana community it called home for 31 years.

On Wednesday, Aug. 29, plant and union leadership presented Sci-Port: Louisiana’s Science Center with the keys to a 2012 white Chevrolet Colorado crew cab pickup truck – one of the last to be built on the GM Shreveport assembly line.

"The Shreveport-Bossier community has been very good to us over the years," said Al Robinson, GM Shreveport plant manager. "We wanted to make a significant gesture to show our appreciation. We know Sci-Port will put this truck to good use as they encourage students to become more interested in science and technology."

GM Shreveport opened its doors in the northwest corner of Caddo Parish in 1981 and built 4,853,693 vehicles before ceasing production on Tuesday, August 28, 2012. Most recently the plant produced Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon mid-size pickup trucks. It was home to the Hummer H3 sports utility vehicle for a short time and its longest nameplate was the Chevrolet S10 pickup truck.

Accepting the truck was Sci-Port President and CEO, Ann S. Fumarolo, who responded, "General Motors has supported us since 1995, before we had a permanent location and when the idea of Sci-Port was just that – an idea. Through the years they invested over $100,000 in our mission of bringing science, technology, engineering and mathematics education to our community. It’s bittersweet to accept this vehicle. I’m not surprised that, even at the very end, GM continues to give back to the students in our community."
