Cross-country runner Chris Sams who is, literally, running across America will be at Sci-Port: Louisiana's Science Center on Saturday to meet with visitors and talk about why he is running across the country. At 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., Chris will lead visitors in a mini-workout program, discuss why a gym isn’t necessarily needed to workout and assist Sci-Port staff with a demonstration about nutrition using Sci-Port’s seven-foot tall, blue-haired, health-teaching doll, Stuffee™.

As for why the Center will host Sams, Sci-Port’s Director of Education Lou Papai said, “An important part of Sci-Port’s strategic plan includes a focus on health awareness. We’re in the bottom ten states when it comes to obesity; over one-third of children in Louisiana are overweight or obese. Through new permanent exhibits, traveling exhibits, developing curriculum-driven programs and bringing in fitness experts such as Chris Sams, we are meeting an important need in the community.”

Sams, who met with students from St. John Berchmans Catholic School at Sci-Port on Friday and led them in a workout program and demonstration with Stuffee™, explained, “I’m promoting health and wellness along my travels from east to west coast. One of the things I want people to know is that setting fitness goals isn’t hard, and I encourage them to write them down. If you think it, ink it.”

As a 27 year-old personal trainer from Maryland, Sams began his trek on August 20, and is halfway through his five-month, over 3,000 mile journey (www.samsacrossamerica.com).

Saturday’s programs take place in the Alta & John Franks Solarium and are free with admission to the Center.
