On Tuesday, Sci-Port: Louisiana’s Science Center and Omega Diagnostics Foundation presented the Caddo Parish School Board with a combined donation valued at $28,183.85 in supplies and in-kind services for a longitudinal afterschool program in medical technology. Sci-Port will administer the program to select sixth grade students at Caddo Middle Magnet, enabling them to develop laboratory skills and foster a passion for lab work and science.

This marks the fourth year that the Omega Diagnostics Foundation has provided funds to Sci-Port to implement the Omega Medical Technology Institute (OMTI) afterschool program in Caddo Parish. The funding will provide Caddo Middle Magnet with the first year of a potential three year afterschool outreach program. The first year’s curriculum is entitled Crime Scene Science and teaches students the fundamentals of blood typing, DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis and more. The curriculum taught to students in the outreach program correlates with Louisiana state-mandated Grade Level Expectations (GLEs). Years two and three of the curriculum build upon the skills learned in year one.

“Omega Diagnostics gets it; they are investing in the next generation of scientists. America ranks far below other developed nations in science education, and we need to take innovative measures, like this program, to address this critical issue,” Sci-Port’s President and CEO Ann Fumarolo said. “Like in business, entrepreneurs who innovate and experiment need the capital outlay to bring their inventions or research to life. Through Sci-Port, Omega is providing these entrepreneurial students the opportunity to experiment, become more comfortable with science, grow their laboratory skills and do things that they would never get to do in a formal classroom setting.”

In addition to this donation, Omega Diagnostics Foundation also funded a third year of OMTI at Farmerville Junior High in Farmerville, La., to be led by Sci-Port staff, and a three-part afterhours adult lecture series to be held at the science center in spring 2013. Their total cash donation to Sci-Port this year is $27,739.35. In four years, Omega Diagnostics has donated over $84,000 to Sci-Port to help promote the profession of medical technology and to increase the growth opportunities of its professionals.

“Omega Diagnostics has been pleased to sponsor this exceptional laboratory science program for the last three years that is now embarking on our fourth year,” said Manager of Omega Diagnostics, LLC Linda A. Price. “Omega’s original plan had been to support Sci-Port in developing a program that would inspire potential laboratory scientists in their formative middle school years and to bring this program to our rural communities, as well. Sci-Port and [Education Coordinator] Ms. Cathy Williamson, the program’s director, took the challenge and succeeded beyond our wildest expectations, creating a wonderful, interactive program that builds on the previous year over 3 years. It goes without saying that any program that can keep middle school students engaged in a focused study for three years is exceptional. Congratulations to Sci-Port, Ms. Williamson and the amazing students who participate in the Omega Medical Technology Institute.”
