SHREVEPORT, LA. – Sci-Port: Louisiana’s Science Center’s STEM Communications Institute is currently in the process of recruiting people actively engaged in any career or hobby related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) for a series of workshops to kick-off this January.

This initiative will allow the public to better understand the work in these fields.

“In a nutshell, our goal is to recruit people with a STEM-related passion but who have a hard time communicating what they actually do to non-scientists,” said Senior Programs Manager Alan Brown. “We all know people like that – people who can't describe what they do or how or why they do it without having to draw graphs, people whose husbands or wives don't really understand what they do, people who wouldn't think to say they work with butterflies because "Lepidoptera" is more precise.”

Through a series of fun and interactive professional development workshops, Sci-Port aims to give these new recruits the sufficient tools they need to distill what they do into terms the non-scientists can comprehend.

STEM professionals will create a hands-on activity that would provide a small window into what they do. Then, they will be directed to the Communications Institute in order to interact with the Center’s visitors. The visitors will benefit through interaction with these practicing scientists in an informal setting. More information and the application can be found at www.sciport.org/portal.
