Sci-Port is hosting a Star Party on Friday, January 23 from 8-11p.m.

The event has become a local favorite for star-lovers big and small. Activities are designed for astronomers of all experience levels to enjoy astronomy via real-time observations.

Sci-Port’s resident astrophysicist and planetarium manager Greg Andrews leads the night’s activities. Visitors gather in the Sawyer Space Dome Planetarium for a talk on the most outstanding constellations in the current night sky. Andrews says “this month’s star party will highlight one of the most popular constellations- Orion. His collection of bright stars, humanistic stick figure and prime position in the night sky make him one of the most memorable constellations. One of Orion’s stars, Betelgeuse, is a supernova waiting to happen.”

In addition to the planetarium presentation, party-goers may attend several astronomy-themed activities stationed throughout the Space Center. Among the kid-friendly activities are Confetti Constellations, Alien Animals, and Planetary Bracelets.

Perhaps the most anticipated portion of the night occurs on the Windham Family Rooftop Terrace, where visitors are guided in finding and identifying celestial bodies. Weather permitting, stargazers will be able to observe constellations, stars, the moon, and planets. Andrews commented, “We’ll take a look at Jupiter’s band system and its moon system too. There are plenty of other sights to behold. If the weather isn’t favorable, we’ll be able to view the cosmos inside the Space Dome.”

Sci-Port will also be presenting showings of Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon in the IMAX® Dome Theatre. Boy Scouts are encouraged to attend the Star Party, as special scout activities will be present for those earning badges.
