Things are about to get busy at Sci-Port: Louisiana’s Science Center.

This weekend, math-lovers from far and wide are invited to celebrate the circular constant on the most epic mathematical holiday of the century. At 9:26:53 on March 14th, the date and time will exactly match the first ten digits of pi, 3.141592653[…]. Celebratory activities at Sci-Port will include making bracelets that code for the digits of pi as well as eating…pie. Learning RX joins Sci-Port this year by providing a booth with activities in honor of Pi Day.

Sci-Port will also begin celebrating Brain Awareness Week Saturday, March 14th. The globally recognized week emphasizes the importance of brain research and neuroscience. Sci-Port joins the effort this year with programming that includes sheep brain dissection, building your own neuron, and presentations by local neuroscientist Dr. Christopher Schmoutz and activities provided by Learning RX.

Dr. Christopher Schmoutz will talk with Sci-Port visitors about the mechanics of memory and use interactive demonstrations to help visualize the processes our brains use to store information.  Visitors will also have the chance to explore brain anatomy with Dr. Schmoutz as he explains the functions of different parts of the brain. Dr. Schmoutz is an assistant professor of Pharmacology, Toxicology, and Neuroscience at LSU Health Shreveport. He teaches advanced topics in neuroscience and pharmacology to medical and graduate students, also conducting research focused on the neurochemistry of addiction that aims to develop new treatments for drug dependence.

Activities for Brain Awareness Week conclude on Friday, March 20th, and are sponsored in part by support from The Carolyn W. and Charles T. Beaird Family Foundation.
