As Give for Good Day approaches on May 5, Sci-Port is making sure all ages can participate in this community-wide day of giving hosted by the Community Foundation of North Louisiana.

Starting Monday, March 30, children are encouraged to pick out a piggy bank from a “pig pen” in Sci-Port’s JPMorgan Chase Grand Lobby to take home. After a month of saving with a goal of raising $10, they are invited back to Sci-Port for a special Hoedown party in their honor.

Sci-Port President/CEO Ann Fumarolo says of the drive, “Sci-Port and kids go together so helping them learn the rewards of supporting something they love was a natural. By taking home a piggy bank and feeding it, they will learn skills like working for and saving money and becoming part of a community of givers. And we want to celebrate their success with a Hoedown on May1!”

The piggy banks are donated to the drive by local banks including JPMorgan Chase Bank, Progressive Bank, Capital One Bank, and Citizens Bank. The sponsoring banks will have volunteer tellers at the May 1st Hoedown to count the donations and present the young donors with special Certificates of Giving. By having local banks as sponsors of the drive, children are introduced to fiscal basics like saving and then depositing their hard-earned money in the bank.

Sci-Port has long been a proponent of introducing children to the rewards of giving. A permanent exhibit in Sci-Port, entitled “The Science of Generosity,” explores the benefits of philanthropy and attributes like kindness, compassion, and giving. The exhibit was the product of a partnership between Sci-Port and the Community Foundation of North Louisiana, and comes full circle as the Community Foundation organizes Give for Good for Sci-Port and other local area non-profits.

All money raised by the junior philanthropists will count towards Sci-Port donations on May 5 for Give for Good. Give for Good allows community members to easily and effectively donate to their favorite non-profits online. The 24-hour period of giving raised over 1 million dollars for the community in 2014, with the Community Foundation matching a portion of all donations.

Each child with a piggy bank may be escorted to the Hoedown by a parent, and each additional guest may attend for $10.
