Shreveport (June 18, 2015) – Capital One Bank announced a gift of $10,000 to Sci-Port: Louisiana’s Science Center to help ease the financial effects felt after the center’s 12-day closure due to the Red River Flood.

“Capital One Bank is pleased to help Sci-Port as it recovers from a nearly two week-long building closure prompted by Northwest Louisiana’s recent flooding,” said Chris Haskew, Capital One Bank’s Louisiana State President. “As a leading local business, Capital One Bank and our local associates would like to take this time to challenge other local organizations and individuals to join in supporting Sci-Port, a nonprofit organization that invests in the next generation of Shreveport’s youth.”

As part of its sponsorship, Capital One Bank presented the Last Annual River and Blues Event on Friday, June 19th at Sci-Port. The event provided guests with a chance to view the Red River as it receded from the banks of downtown Shreveport. Local blues band Kings of Pleasure performed music for the event, and local businesses provided food and drinks. Capital One North Louisiana Market President Rick Larsen presented the bank’s donation to Sci-Port in a special check presentation ceremony at the event.

“We’re so thankful for Capital One Bank’s continual support in our mission to bring STEM education to our area. Losing over a week’s worth of revenue during our busiest time of the year has presented a real challenge to our goals,” said Ann Fumarolo, Sci-Port President/CEO. “The River and Blues event, made possible by Capital One Bank, is the perfect way to let our members and visitors know that we’re back and better than ever, ready to continue providing STEM programming to our community.”

This isn’t the first time that Capital One Bank and Sci-Port have joined forces. As part of Capital One Bank’s MLK Jr. Neighborhood Place-Based Initiative (MLK PBI), Sci-Port Outreach staff provides hands-on science and math demonstrations to students of Shreveport’s Martin Luther King Jr. neighborhood area. Capital One Bank’s MLK PBI is a multi-faceted community revitalization project created by Capital One to serve as a catalyst for the redevelopment of the MLK Jr. neighborhood of Shreveport.
