Founded in 1999, Science Academy is a seven-week course offered annually for local students, grades K-6, who show special interest in science. Participants are selected not only by teacher recommendations, but also for their above-average grades and test scores in science and math. Typically, students begin Science Academy in kindergarten and participate all the way through the fifth or sixth grade.

During this year’s Science Academy, participants from J.S. Clark, Werner Park, Caddo Heights, Shreve Island, and Oil City elementary schools are exploring the various facets of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) from week to week. While studying each letter associated with STEAM, students are engaged by presentations and hands-on activities designed to encourage exploration and question-asking.

On Wednesday, February 10, the Bossier City Police Department presented to Science Academy students on the use of K9’s and robotics in their various lines of work. Students had the opportunity to interact with the officers and ask questions pertaining to the use of technology in the field of law enforcement.

This year’s Science Academy is generously sponsored by Shreveport Medical Society Alliance.
